The Top 10 Lessons of Y2K
by Jim M. Allen
Now that the new year has come and the "Y2K Problem" appears to be under control, it's a good time to take stock of the situation. It may be difficult to see just what all the fuss was about, but it's not too difficult to see some lessons emerging from the Y2K scare...
1. A problem unsolved is still a problem.
2. Unresolved, problems evolve: changing structure and growing in scale, impact, and cost.
3. Leaving a problem for "someone else" to solve only works if "someone else" does.
4. The reality of situation is never as bad as what you imagined it would be.
5. The real trouble may not come when you expect it to.
6. The Boy Scouts are right: Always Be Prepared.
7. Get the facts firsthand: Don't trust everything you read/see in the news.
8. Over-reliance on technology is a mistake. (Make back-ups of everything.)
9. Given the time and resources, people will always make the difference.
10. You can never truly know what tomorrow will bring.
